Which state is better for veterans — Arizona or Florida?
There's no universal answer; the better state depends on your priorities. Below are the factors that most often decide the question.
If you're a military retiree
Both retirement income tax and property tax matter most in retirement. Arizona does not tax military retirement pay, while Florida does not tax military retirement pay. On property, Arizona offers a partial property tax reduction, and Florida offers a full homestead exemption to 100% P&T veterans.
If you have school-age children
Arizona's headline program is the Arizona National Guard Tuition Reimbursement Program — Reimburses tuition for Arizona National Guard members at state schools. Veterans can use the Post-9/11 GI Bill at Arizona public colleges with in-state tuition under the Yellow Ribbon and federal Choice Act. Florida's is the Florida Scholarships for Children and Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Veterans — Florida offers tuition waivers at state universities, community colleges, and career centers for children and spouses of veterans who died in service or are 100% disabled. Florida is also a Purple Heart and Yellow Ribbon participating state.
If you're still on active duty
Proximity to a major installation matters for housing markets, healthcare options (Tricare), and post-service employment networks. Arizona hosts 4 significant installation(s) including Luke AFB, Davis-Monthan AFB, Fort Huachuca.Florida hosts 9 including MacDill AFB, NAS Jacksonville, NAS Pensacola.
Climate and lifestyle
Arizona: Hot desert summers and mild winters; minimal humidity. Higher elevations (Flagstaff, Prescott) offer four seasons. Florida: Warm humid subtropical to tropical climate; year-round outdoor weather but hurricane risk June–November.
