Which state is better for veterans — Minnesota or Florida?
There's no universal answer; the better state depends on your priorities. Below are the factors that most often decide the question.
If you're a military retiree
Both retirement income tax and property tax matter most in retirement. Minnesota does not tax military retirement pay, while Florida does not tax military retirement pay. On property, Minnesota offers a partial property tax reduction, and Florida offers a full homestead exemption to 100% P&T veterans.
If you have school-age children
Minnesota's headline program is the Minnesota GI Bill & Surviving Spouse and Dependent Education Benefit — The Minnesota GI Bill provides up to $10,000 of education benefits (tuition, fees, books, OJT, licensing) over a veteran's lifetime — independent of the federal GI Bill. Dependents of deceased/totally disabled veterans receive additional tuition support. Florida's is the Florida Scholarships for Children and Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Veterans — Florida offers tuition waivers at state universities, community colleges, and career centers for children and spouses of veterans who died in service or are 100% disabled. Florida is also a Purple Heart and Yellow Ribbon participating state.
If you're still on active duty
Proximity to a major installation matters for housing markets, healthcare options (Tricare), and post-service employment networks. Minnesota hosts 2 significant installation(s) including Camp Ripley (Minnesota Army National Guard), Duluth ANG Base.Florida hosts 9 including MacDill AFB, NAS Jacksonville, NAS Pensacola.
Climate and lifestyle
Minnesota: Cold continental climate with very cold winters and warm summers; many lakes and outdoor opportunities. Florida: Warm humid subtropical to tropical climate; year-round outdoor weather but hurricane risk June–November.
