How VA "Whole Person" Math Works
The VA does not add disability ratings together. Each rating is applied to the "remaining efficiency" left after prior ratings. A 50% rating combined with a 30% rating produces a 65% exact value (rounded to 70%) — not 80%.
The same logic compounds across all ratings: the highest rating is applied first, then each lower rating reduces what's left of the 100% baseline. The final value rounds to the nearest 10%.
Assumptions Behind These Calculators
- Compensation rates reflect the most recent base rates available; always confirm against VA.gov before making financial decisions.
- Dependent additions only apply at 30% rating and higher.
- Special Monthly Compensation (SMC), aid & attendance, and bilateral factors are not modeled.
- GI Bill housing estimates use simplified proration factors — your school's exact ZIP-specific rate may differ.
- The VA loan calculator models no PMI (VA loans never carry it) and finances the funding fee into the loan unless you indicate a disability exemption.
